DRUG TEST ON ATHLETES

When athletes are called for drug tests on athletes they are sure that are drug test will happen, they will prepare for it and thereby they will neutralize the effects of drug testing with respect to detecting the use of performance enhancing drugs and/or detecting masking agents.

For drug testing athletes two ways of preparation of the sample is done:
•    A year-round short notice
•    No-notice testing

Year-round short-notice and no-notice testing are the pretty effective means to test the use of training drugs since they make athletes at risk to be tested.  Some countries claim to have achieved successful no-notice testing with good results.
The drug testing of athletes process starts begins with taking a urine sample. This may sound simple; however, it is a big process has to be undergone for this. We might think about why we do not use blood for testing as a substitute for urine. There are many reasons for not being able to use the blood for testing.  No real headache in sample collection of urine and no pin prick pains and paramedics.
Once the drug testing on athletes is initiated the athlete is required for drug testing, they will be notified by an official and they will be required to sign an acknowledgement.  The training station is particularly designed as a mobile testing unit, independent of sampling officers.  Each of the officers will carry a time limited ID card with a letter of authority for the event to which they are allotted. This is done to prevent athletes bribe the officers.
The drug testing in athletes is permitted is numbered bottles, before they give the urine the athlete will have to fill a form and they will have to declare the consumption of drug a week before.  It can include prescription drugs and other drugs if any.  After the independent sampling officer interviews to find the athlete in question, it is unlikely that the testing remains a surprise since by the way they react to the forms most details will be predictable and the guilt will be confirmed by positive or positive for adulterated sample.
Correct storage of samples is pretty important after the tests. As part of sports doping policy, the urine is not refrigerated or frozen until it reaches the lab. After all these procedures in the lab, if the test is going to be positive, it proves that the athlete has consumed the drug and a report with appropriate reasons and specifications of the drug are submitted. Before reporting confirmatory tests are done on the sample.

ATHLETE DRUG TEST

Athletes drug test is done to make sure that training is the best way to victory and in a way to detect abuse, but they also get the message that some drugs and other practices can help them to boost their efforts and give them a shortcut, even if they understand they risk their health and their athletic career if they get caught, they go ahead with it..

Athletes are pretty much willing to take any preparation that would improve their performance and fames. It is seen that the usage of drugs has increased since 1960’s. In Seoul Olympics in 1988, sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for anabolic steroids and he was ripped of his gold medal. Athletes might also misuse drugs to relax, in a way to cope with stress or in a way to boost their own confidence.

Athletes would have many reasons for using performance boosting drugs. An athlete might prefer to build the strength of their muscles and bones in away to increase the oxygen delivery to the tissues and to relax themselves and boost up their confidence in a way to hide the usage of other drugs etc, all at their own risks.

The athlete drug test can be done in several ways; however, for most drug testing on athletes the majority of the drugs that are being used by the athletes are detected in samples of urine. An athlete that is told by a drug control officer to submit a urine sample for testing would be giving the sample and the sample will be sent to a laboratory for analysis and the results will be reported back to the governing athletic agency. However, for some substances, blood samples might be required. The basic test is immunoassay using test strips.

Drug test on athletes is confirmed with Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry These tests are done on urine and blood samples. In gas chromatography, when the sample is analyzed, the retention time is reported or plotted to create a chromatogram. In mass spectrometry, samples are blown apart with an electron beam and the fragments are accelerated down a long magnetic tube to a detector. Each substance will have a unique “fingerprint” in the mass spectrometer.

Standard samples are run for detection and quantification of drugs in the urine/blood samples in both the methods.

Although there is too meager statistical proof on how widespread doping is, athletes and coaches stress that most competitors do not take drugs; however, they do not listen to it. Nonetheless, drug testing is becoming an increasingly integral part of sports competitions due to such an air of disobedience. As more and more performance-enhancing drugs are developed drug tests for athletes and the battle to keep sports clean continues.
