Codeine is an analgesic or painkiller that has been obtained from poppy seeds. It is an opiate that contains methyl morphine and also serves to be precursor for other semi synthetic opioids. Usually it is taken as salts of salicylates, phosphates, sulphates, citrates, etc. Though continuous use of codeine leads to physical and psychological dependence, yet it has lower abuse liability and milder withdrawal symptoms.
