Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is caused by a virus named human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that lives and multiples in white blood cells that are part of the immune system. This virus ultimately leads to depletion of cells and tissues in the body. As the immune system weakens, the HIV-infected person becomes vulnerable to various illnesses and infections. Behavioral disorders that include drug abuse where a sharing of needles occurs and risky sexual contacts are the central to the spread of AIDS since the epidemic began more than 30 years ago.
