Codeine is an analgesic or painkiller that has been obtained from poppy seeds. It is an opiate that contains methyl morphine and also serves to be precursor for other semi synthetic opioids. Usually it is taken as salts of salicylates, phosphates, sulphates, citrates, etc. Though continuous use of codeine leads to physical and psychological dependence, yet it has lower abuse liability and milder withdrawal symptoms.
Codeine is usually consumed orally after which it is absorbed through the mucous membranes into circulation where it is converted into a more potent analgesic morphine and other forms of codeine in liver. The rate and the extent to which the drug is metabolized depend on the racial and genetic make up of the individual. This morphine then acts on the opiod receptors producing the therapeutic benefits.

The metabolites after exerting its action are excreted via the renal secretory mechanism which depends on the rate of metabolism. Urine can be tested only for morphine and other metabolites of codeine.
The test essentially comprises of three steps- collection of the samples, testing and interpretation of the results. Either you can test the person’s sample in the laboratory or an on the spot drug test can be done at work places. In case the drug test shows positive, you must send the person’s sample for confirmatory drug testing to a lab as the previous procedure was just a screening.

There are only a few cases where people test positive only for one drug, specifically if it were due to prescriptions or some other kind of over dosage.
