Introduction

• Try cyclic are hetro cyclic chemical compound. They are primarily used as anti depressants. They are named after their chemical structure which has 3 rings of atoms.
• This drug is primarily used in the clinical treatment of mood disorders, major depression, dysthymia and treatment resistant variants.
• It is also used in the treatment of many anxiety disorders such as schizophrenia.
• Recently trycyclic anti depressants have been largely replaced by newer anti depressants  such as SSRIS (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ) and SNRIS (serotonin nor epinephrine reuptake inhibitors ) because they have more favorable side effect profiles.

Side Effects – Short Term

• Some of the physical side effects may be related to the properties of TCS which include dry mouth , dry nose ,  blurry vision , weak gastro intestinal motility or constipation ,urinary retention , cognitive or memory impairment , increase in body temperature , Twitching of muscles , Hypotension, irregular heart rhythm , cardio toxicity etc.
• Other  psychological side effects are anxiety , emotional blunting , confusion , restlessness , drowsiness , hypersensitivity , changes in appetite , loss in weight , profuse sweating , sexual dysfunction , hallucination , delirium , and coma  etc .

Long Term Effects

• Cardiac effects – Hypertension, Hypotension, Tachycardia, orthostatic, ventricular tachycardia, ECG Changes etc.
• CNS Effects – Syncope , seizure ,  coma , myoclonus etc
• Effects on Pulmonary system – From CNS depression Hypoventilation occurs
• Effects on Gastrointestinal system – Decreased or absent bowl movement constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss etc.
• Effects on the brain- Altered mental status, change in nature, education, confusion, lethargy, sensitivity to sunlight etc.

Effects on pregnancy- The babies have problems if the mothers consumed try cyclic during pregnancy
